Those looking for an epic historical drama to watch should try one hailed as a “masterpiece” and a great movie thats streaming on Prime Video.

This comes after film buffs are already raving about a WWII film even before it’s hit screens and a Netflix period drama compared to HBO’s Chernobyl.

The movie holds an 86 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 88 per cent on the Popcornmeter, which is rated by audiences.

Many people have previously posted on Rotten Tomatoes about the movie, which is based on an incredible true story.

One person gave an impressive 5/5 stars and said: “The best movie I have ever seen.”

They went on to say: “It’s a spectacularly beautiful film. Many of the professional film critics’ reviews criticize the “plot”, not recognizing that the movie is a historical narrative of the vastly changing culture of more than a billion people [sic].”

A second person wrote in their 4/5 star review that the film was a “humane masterpiece” that dramatises real-life events.

They went on to say: “The final scene’s beauty perfectly concluded one’s life story and everyone’s currently fed perception, coming off as symbolically poetic along the respectful lines that only film form could artistically deliver as visual addition to the facts.”

A third person wrote in their top-rated review: “Absolutely loved it! One of my favourite movies, I strongly reccomend it [sic].”

Yet another person commented in their five-star review: “Amazing historical film with a superb wardrobe, filmography, scenography, so on… It is a film that everyone should watch.”

The Last Emperor was released in 1987 and is a biographical movie based on the life of Puyi, the last Emperor of China.

The Hollywood movie was adapted from Puyi’s 1964 autobiography and followed him from an infant to his ascent to the throne, before his later political imprisonment and rehabilitation by the Chinese Community Party.

The timeline is told in flashbacks from Puyi’s incarceration in the 1950s to his life in the early 20th century as China is undergoing much change.

The Last Emperor was the first film to be shot in the Forbidden City in Beijing, before the country was opened up to tourism.

The movie starred Chinese-American star John Lone as the title character and his performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Other cast members included legendary British actor Peter O’Toole of Lawrence of Arabia fame, Joan Chen from Hero, Ying Ruocheng, Victor Wong, Dennis Dun, Vivian Wu, Lisa Lu, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, among others.

The film was nominated for nine Oscars at the 60th Academy Awards and took home all of them, including accolades for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Last Emperor also took home three BAFTA Film Awards, a quartet of Golden Globes and a Grammy for its score.
