Some films stay with you long after the credits roll. Often it is because of a final twist that comes out of nowhere and completely changes everything you thought you knew. And for fans of Sherlock-style mysteries and mind games, there is one film that viewers say delivers that same feeling, the shock, the cleverness and the urge to rewatch it immediately.
The movie was released in the mid-1990s. It now has an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and many people say they were left stunned by the ending. What’s more, several viewers who enjoyed BBC’s Sherlock have recommended it as a perfect alternative for anyone who loves unpredictable stories and detective-style twists.
The film in question is Primal Fear. Released in 1996, the crime and legal mystery follows Chicago defence attorney Martin Vail, played by Richard Gere.
He takes on the case of Aaron Stampler, an altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic bishop.
Edward Norton, in his first film role, stars as the defendant and went on to earn widespread recognition for his performance.
The film was directed by Gregory Hoblit and is based on William Diehl’s 1993 novel.
The supporting cast includes Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Alfre Woodard, Frances McDormand and Terry O’Quinn.
The movie went on to become a box office success, with Norton winning a Golden Globe and receiving Oscar and BAFTA nominations.
Those who have seen the film say they were blown away by it.
One person said: “This is one of the best murder mystery, psychological suspense films I have ever seen. This thing will keep you riveted and guessing right down to the end.”
Another added: “Primal Fear is one of the few examples of a psychological thriller with young, new talent shining in a film with a great script and excellent direction. Edward Norton could not have picked a better film in which to debut.”
A third wrote: “Primal Fear is really one of those movies that has a good story that builds up the suspense level with acting and directing and delivers a shocking plot twist at the end.
“In an almost Sherlock style, the ending keeps you awake at night. As a Sherlock fan myself I loved it and I’m sure anyone who is a fan of the detective series will love this film too.”
Someone else said: “I’ve got to say this – this movie is a true masterpiece, and just might be the best court-room drama ever made.
“Everything about it is perfect – the script is perfect, and so is the directing. And don’t get me started on the acting. Richard Gere nailed his part, and this was at the time he actually played in good films.
“But the one who steals the show here is without any doubt young Edward Norton in his first big part. His acting is nothing but brilliant and even genius.”
Primal Feal is available to stream on Paramount+. It can also be bought or rented on Prime Video.
