A ‘remarkable’ science fiction film is now available for free streaming, and fans are urged to watch it before the new Ryan Gosling movie.
Originally launched in 2015, The Martian is available on Disney Plus. However, those without a subscription need not miss out as it is now accessible for free via BBC iPlayer.
According to its synopsis, The Martian’s narrative begins when astronauts depart from the planet Mars, leaving behind Mark Watney, presumed deceased after a severe storm.
With only a scant amount of supplies, the marooned visitor must use his intelligence and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, NASA members and a team of international scientists work relentlessly to bring him home, whilst his crew mates devise their own plan for a daring rescue mission.
Cinema-goers should seize the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the film before Ryan Gosling’s latest venture arrives on the big screen. The actor is set to feature in Project Hail Mary, hitting UK cinemas from the end of this week on March 20, reports the Mirror.
The reason viewers should watch is not only because both films follow similar themes, focusing on a solitary astronaut or scientist, finding themselves alone on a vital mission in space, but also because both films are adaptations of popular novels penned by the same author.
They are big screen adaptations of works from acclaimed author Andy Weir. He is recognised for his sweeping narratives and incorporating credible science within his stories.
And he now has two of his novels adapted by renowned filmmakers.
Whilst Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for Into The Spiderverse, helm Project Hail Mary, The Martian was crafted by Ridley Scott, known for Gladiator and Alien amongst others.
Project Hail Mary is also aiming to match or even exceed the critical and commercial triumph achieved by The Martian. The Matt Damon starring film earned more than $600 million at the box office and registered a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It was also nominated for seven Oscars.
Fans and critics alike continue to regard The Martian as one of the finest sci-fi films that enthusiasts of the genre must watch. One person, sharing their thoughts online claimed: “Phenomenal. It’s like the Mars version of Castaway but potatoes instead of a volleyball.”
Whilst another added: “Ridley Scott makes a ‘family-friendly Alien style’ movie. If you familiar with the Alien franchise you feel like you watch one of them. I recommend it to the every sci-fi and space lover.”
Another individual stated: “Ridley Scott’s modern-day masterpiece, The Martian, is a beautiful, faithful adaptation of an already excellent novel. ” Whilst another responded: “In my opinion the Martian is one of Matt Damon’s best movies. Whilst there are some plot points and problems, there are parts that feel realistic and possible. Even though this movie is mostly set on mars, the movie stays grounded with its use technology. The visuals are stunning, and the character were perfectly chosen for this film.”
The Martian is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney+.
