Popular hand cleaner recalled over infection fears as customers urged to return it ASAP | UK | News

A popular hand gel has been recalled due to the risk that it’s contaminated with a harmful bacteria. People are being urged to return it as soon as possible as the hand cleaner may cause infection or irritation. The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a recall notice for the Elbow Grease Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner from 151 Products Ltd. The yellow hand gel, which is made in Turkey, comes in a 500ml clear plastic bottle with red lid.

The affected batch is infected with aerobic mesophilic bacteria. It can cause infection or irritation if it comes in contact with damaged skin or eyes.

Officials say the product has an item number EG73 and a barcode of 5053249248059. The affected batch is 00645 and consumers should return it as soon as possible.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards said: “The affected batch presents a microbiological risk as it is contaminated with aerobic mesophilic bacteria (measured value up to 9200 cfu/g).

“If used on damaged skin, or if it comes into contact with the eyes, the product may cause infection or irritation. The affected batch does not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) The product was recalled from end users by the manufacturer, 151 Products Ltd, in 2023.”

They added: “Users are advised to check the product packaging, batch number and barcode. If their product is part of the affected batch, consumers should return the item to their place of purchase as soon as possible.”

The warning comes after products ranging from breakfast cereal and sweet treats to pickles have been recalled in recent weeks. Notices issued by the Food Standards Agency warned of problems including contamination with glass or insects and undeclared ingredients that could trigger allergies.

They include granola which may have an “insect infestation”, plastic in lasagne and an allergy warning on pistachio bars. It’s important shoppers who have bought the recalled products return them to stores immediately.
