Swansea CEO Tom Gorringe has criticised Sky Sports for their coverage of the recent televised fixture with Wrexham last week. Sky provided viewers with the option to watch the match with guest commentary from Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for Swansea’s recent trip to the Racecourse, with the hosts securing a 2-0 victory.
Swansea’s senior management were believed to have been dissatisfied by the extent of focus given to their opponents both during the match and in the lead-up by Sky, and Gorringe has now confirmed he will be raising the issue with the EFL. Writing in his programme notes ahead of Saturday’s televised fixture with Coventry, Gorringe said: “We have the Sky Sports cameras in attendance once again, although hopefully coverage of this fixture will be more balanced than what we witnessed around our game at Wrexham last weekend.
“Whilst I don’t think anyone would dispute that we want to continue to grow the profile of the EFL product, the means by which we do so should be balanced and impartial.”
“In my view, the build-up to and coverage of the game itself left a lot to be desired on those particular scores.
“With the production being done by Rob and Ryan’s own production company, all of the guests and focus was on their team, there were celebrations with David Prutton – the face of Sky’s EFL coverage – and the advert for the commentary of the game failed to mention that we were playing at all.
“It felt to myself and a number of members of our staff that we were very much an afterthought and that our hosts were given priority at every opportunity, and as a club we would strongly suggest that greater critical thought is given to how these situations are handled moving forward.
“This is a position that I will discuss with the EFL next week.”
Wrexham secured victory on the evening, with Nathan Broadhead firing the Reds ahead on 25 minutes, before a Liam Cullen own goal two minutes from full-time sealed the win.
The outcome leaves the Swans eight points behind the top six going into their clash with Coventry.
Wrexham enter the weekend with only goal difference dividing them from Southampton in sixth, and continue to hold genuine play-off ambitions.
