Storm tracker LIVE: Maps show lightning strikes as Met Office extends warning | Weather | News

The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning with heavy rain set to arrive sooner than expected.

The alert, which was previously due to come into force from Thursday evening, now warns that heavy rain is expected from 6am across central and southern England, lasting until 9am on Friday.

The weather organisation has warned that heavy rain will hit the UK and could likely bring flooding and disruption to transport.

They said: “A band of heavy rain will affect Northern Ireland, northern England, parts of north Wales, and for a time southern Scotland. Brighter to the south, but with heavy, locally thundery showers. Drier, brighter, but colder further north. Blustery in places.

“Tonight, rain, some heavy and perhaps thundery, will move south across England and Wales. Otherwise clear spells, with a patchy frost, and showers in the far north. Strong winds.”
