Sweet link Princess Beatrice’s baby Athena shares with this key royal | Royal | News

Princess Beatrice,36, and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have been wrapped up in a newborn baby buddle since they welcomed their second child together earlier this year. Beatrice gave birth to a daughter, named Athena, weighing 4lb 5oz on January 22 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

The news was announced via an official statement from Buckingham Palace and Edoardo also shared a heartwarming message which read: “Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her. Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena. A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time.”

Her first name, Athena, is of Greek origin, and a reference to the goddess of wisdom. The ‘A’ name could also be a nod to both Beatrice and Edoardo’s fathers, who have A names Prince Andrew and Alessandro “Alex” Mapelli Mozzi, respectively.

The couple named their first daughter Sienna, an ‘S’ name, as a tribute to Beatrice’s mom, Sarah Ferguson, often commonly referred to as Fergie.

They chose Elizabeth as one of their daughter’s middle names in a tribute to Beatrice’s late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Rose, and it seems there may be a sweet meaning behind this.

The name Rose may be a touching nod to Princess Margaret, the late Queen’s sister, who shared the same middle name.

Born on August 21 1930, Princess Margaret was known and loved for her acerbic wit, with many of her one-liners being praised as “legendary”.

Athena is a younger sister to the couple’s three-year-old daughter, Sienna, and Mr Mapelli Mozzi’s son and Beatrice’s stepson, eight-year-old Wolfie.

Beatrice’s new daughter will fall 11th in the royal line of succession, following her sister Sienna – who is 10th in line.

Athena’s birth now means that her aunt, Princess Eugenie will now move to 12th in line to the throne.
