Joe Cole has called for an investigation into the Tottenham dressing room, as supporters direct their criticism for the club’s poor run of form towards Thomas Frank. The Danish head coach has been unable to reverse fortunes in north London since taking over from Ange Postecoglou in the summer. Spurs are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table following seven victories, an equal number of draws and nine defeats this campaign.
Consequently, Frank has faced increasing hostility from supporters in recent weeks, with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning,” echoing from Tottenham fans both home and away this month. Yet former West Ham and Chelsea winger Cole has encouraged supporters to examine the broader situation, rather than solely blaming Frank for the dismal spell.
Speaking before Tottenham’s Champions League fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt, Cole said: “We were talking off air there, and I really feel for Thomas Frank. Daniel Levy’s left, who knew everything at that club, everything went through him; he chose the spoons in the kitchen.
“So it’s a real mess at the moment, and the fans are still calling for change but where do you want to change it to? They won’t win trophies, think it’s one or two in 30, 40 years.
“They want to play like this, then they don’t want to play like that and Thomas Frank is just the front man. Just give him time, let him do his thing, he did it at Brentford.
“He did it at his previous club where he built something and he’s in the middle of a firestorm at the moment. Everything is coming on Thomas Frank but I think the dressing room at Spurs really needs addressing.
“Some of the behaviour from the players towards Thomas Frank and their own fans and some of the stuff online and all that nonsense, I just think that’s the problem at Tottenham, it’s not Thomas Frank.”
Frank has described Spurs’ final European league phase game as a “great opportunity” to take the focus off their dismal domestic campaign.
“We need to play our ‘A’ game and if we do that, I think we have a good chance to get the win,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity, and that is what we need to embrace. We need to come flying out with the belief that we can do it. It’s a huge opportunity and we need to do everything we can to grab it.”
