As temperatures begin to rise across the UK, experts are warning homeowners to stay alert for more than just mice and rats this season. While these furry pests often get the blame for springtime infestations, three lesser-known and just as unsettling pests are expected to make their way indoors this year.

Drawn in by warmth, food, and shelter, these “creepy” intruders could catch many households off guard if they’re not prepared. A spokesperson from We Waste warned: “March is a key time for increases in pest activity as they seek to find food sources, water, and nesting spots as the weather warms, and homes provide the perfect spots for food and warmth.

“As well as this, an increase in moisture levels from spring rain and small gaps around properties makes it easier for pests to enter homes, meaning it is vital that people focus on prevention this March, and check their properties thoroughly.”

1. Ants

During the spring season, ants often come indoors in search of food. These pests enter through small gaps and often occur in large groups.

Early signs of an invasion include tiny bits of debris near floors, patios, or cracks in walls, which may point to a nearby nest or entry point. Seeing more ants than usual can also mean there’s a bigger problem.

Check common entry areas and food storage spaces, as ants are attracted to sugar, crumbs, and small openings around windows, doors, and vents. To help prevent ants, especially in warmer weather, keep surfaces clean and store food in sealed containers.

The expert from We Waste advises: “Taking the bins out regularly and sealing gaps and cracks in the property is also an essential way to ensure there are no easy access points and nothing they could be attracted to.

“Taking care of the outside of your property is also key. Trim plants that are in contact with the house and keep outdoor bins and compost areas away from the property where possible.”

2. Moths

According to Total Wardrobe Care, moth activity rises in spring as warmer weather prompts them to hatch from their cocoons. Infestations can develop quickly, especially when homes are aired out, and unwashed clothes attract moths.

To reduce the risk, keep spaces clean, wash clothes before storing, check fabrics regularly, and vacuum carpets and skirting boards often. We Waste says: “Avoid overcrowding wardrobes, as moths prefer dark environments where fabrics are tightly packed together. Natural deterrents such as lavender sachets or specialised moth traps can help discourage moths from settling.”

3. Cockroaches

Cockroach activity also increases due to the warmer weather. They are mostly active at night, so that’s the best time to check for them.

Signs include small black droppings under sinks, in cupboards, behind fridges, or near food. A musty smell, along with brown smear marks on walls or surfaces, can also indicate their presence.

We Waste added: “Remove any water sources such as leaky taps, pipes, and ensure sinks are left dry at night as cockroaches are strongly attracted to water sources as they need moisture to survive.”
