UK’s ‘cheapest town’ named – where students ‘only’ need £758 a month | UK | News

Middlesbrough has been named the cheapest town for students to live in the UK, with average monthly expenses amounting to just £758.58, according to new research.

This total includes essential costs like rent, utilities, groceries, and transportation, making it the most affordable student town in the country.

Close behind is Sunderland, where students spend an average of £775.77 per month. This is according to a new study carried out by L&C Mortgages.

Both towns are located in the North East of England and offer some of the most budget-friendly living conditions for students.

A spokesperson from L&C Mortgages stressed the importance of location when choosing where to study, saying: “The town or city that a university is in will certainly inform someone’s choice.

“Not only does location greatly affect a student’s experience, but it also influences how comfortably and affordably they are able to live in their new home.”

The research also highlighted that areas in the North of England and Wales tend to be more affordable for students.

Hull, Carmarthen, and Pontypridd followed Middlesborough and Sunderland closely behind with average monthly costs of £782.82, £786.69, and £800.69, respectively.

These towns offer students relatively low rents, with Middlesbrough having an average rent of £286.81 for a one-bedroom residence, while Sunderland’s rent averages £304.63.

In contrast, London was found to be the most expensive student city, with an eye-watering monthly expenditure of £1,542.44, including an average rent of £1,006.75.

Other costly student locations include Brighton, Oxford, Bristol, and Guildford.

While the choice of university is often dictated by factors such as course quality and entry requirements, the L&C Mortgages spokesperson also stressed that the cost of living is a significant factor for many students and their families.

They added: “Researching respective costs for different locations could help in the decision-making process.”
