Rasmus Hojlund was one of three Denmark players to miss a penalty as they lost out on a place at the World Cup to Czechia. The out-on-loan Manchester United striker could not convert their first spot-kick, with Anders Dreyer and Mathias Jensen also failing to find the back of the net.
Viktor Gyokeres, however, fired Sweden through after scoring an 88th-minute winner against Poland to take one of the final spots at this summer’s tournament in North America. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring for the Scandinavians, who twice led only to be pegged back by their opponents before the Arsenal striker struck the decisive blow late on.
A dozen years is the World Cup drought Italy are currently on. It will at least extend to 16 after missing out on a third consecutive World Cup.
Turkey have qualified for just the third time and will make their first appearance in 24 years, having finished third on the last occasion in 2002. Fenerbahce forward Kerem Akturkoglu scored the only goal in their 1-0 win away to Kosovo in Pristina. Either Bolivia or Iraq, as well as one of the Democratic Republic of Congo or Jamaica, will complete the line-up.
