The Met Office has urged Brits to be careful tomorrow morning as many return to work after the Christmas break. In a message published on X on January 4, the national forecaster wrote: “Take extra care during the Monday morning commute and check before travelling. Snow and ice will lead to some difficult travelling conditions.”
The Met Office also shared a forecast showing the weather conditions and temperatures to expect between 6am and 11am tomorrow, with Manchester expected to be one of the coldest cities in Britain in the early morning with a -4C forecast. The map also suggests Birmingham could face a -4C freeze, while London and Southampton could wake up to -2C, similarly to Glasgow.
During the morning, the weather conditions will get only slightly warmer, with Manchester forecast to reach -1C by 11am and Birmingham and London – as well as Norwich and Hull – to hit 0C.
In the latest Met Office video forecast, metereologist Greg Dewhurst said Scotland will be the worst hit by snow tomorrow, but many areas across the country will remain in the grip of the cold snap.
He said: “For the evening and overnight into Monday morning, it’s a cold one, temperatures below freezing widely across the UK. Areas of sleet and snow pushing south across England and Wales will lead some icy stretched further. Sleet and snow showers for parts of Northern Ireland and heavy snow showers across Northern Scotland continuing into Monday morning and amber snow warning out for northern parts of Scotland. Another 20 to 30 centimetre could fall here on what has already fallen. We have seen reports of 50 centimetres in places, so deep snow across this part of the world and temperatures widely below freezing, -2C to -5C and in the countryside possibly down to -10C for one or two of us.
“So it could be a tricky commute in places on Monday morning. Areas of sleet and snow particularly across parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, down into the west country as well as down eastern parts of England. Further snow showers across Northern Scotland too. Icy stretches for all and through the day we continue to see a mixture of sunny spells and wintry showers for all of us and a cold-feeling day as well.”
Ahead of the expected cold temperatures and snowy conditions, the Met Office has issued several weather warnings, with seven to be in place during various times on Monday.
A rare amber warning for snow has come into force today at 6pm and will remain in place until 10am in areas in four Scottish regions – Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar and Orkney & Shetland.
Six yellow alerts for snow and ice will be in place, including one covering a large area of Scotland, which has been in place since midnight on Saturday and will end at 11.59 tomorrow.
The whole of Northern Ireland is also facing a yellow weather warning for snow and ice tomorrow, which has been in force since noon on Saturday.
Elsewhere, the East Midlands, East of England, North East England, Yorkshire & Humber and two areas in southwestern Scotland are to be under a snow and ice yellow warning from midnight on Monday to 11am on Tuesday.
Areas of South West England and Wales will be affected by a snow and ice warning from 12pm tomorrow to 11am on Tuesday, January 6, while other areas in the East Midlands, North West England, South West England, Wales and West Midlands are expected to see a yellow warning for snow and ice ending at 12pm tomorrow, atfter it came into force at midday today.
