Fury after Prince William and Princess Kate comparison to the Beckhams | Royal | News

A royal commentator has blasted comparisons between the Prince and Princess of Wales and David and Victoria Beckham. Princess Catherine was on the latest cover of The Times magazine, featuring a cover story on the future Queen, with various claims made eponymously and anonymously by those closest to her.

A segment of the story cited a “well-placed source” close to Prince William and his wife, talking about how well they understand their brand and comparing them to the celebrity couple. They said: “While it may seem a completely ridiculous comparison, it reminds me a bit of dear old David and Victoria Beckham.

“I think the public can spot a genuine relationship and a genuinely strong marriage and two people who fit well together.

“How strong they are individually, but also as a couple. And I think that’s probably a great asset.”

However, the comparison did not sit well with the Daily Mail columnist Amanda Patell, who branded it “cheap”.

She wrote: “My point is that a good number of friends and acquaintances – some named, others anonymous – do talk about [Catherine] in the article.

“And, given all this emphasis on her as our future Queen, I don’t think they should have.”

She added: “One source goes so far as to compare William and Kate to ‘dear old David and Victoria Beckham’, in the way they appreciate their own brand.

“A strong marriage is undoubtedly important to the royals but do we really want to cheapen our future King and Queen by likening them to the Beckhams?

“Is it really how William and Kate want to be perceived in this unforgiving social media world?”
