King and Queen US tour LIVE: State visit to go ahead despite shooting | Royal | News

US President Donald Trump has said the King and Queen will “be very safe” during their four-day state visit to the US, which will begin in a matter of hours.

Last night, it was confirmed that the trip would go ahead after security talks were held between the White House and Buckingham Palace following a shooting at a dinner attended by the President on Saturday night.

Asked about the security implications of the royal visit, the US president told CBS’s 60 Minutes on Sunday that the White House grounds, where the King and Queen will visit, are “really safe”.

“I think it’s ‌great; he’ll be very safe,” Trump said in the interview. “The White House grounds are really safe.”

He echoes the words of the British Ambassador to the US, who said last night that officials are “very confident that all appropriate security measures are in place” following a shooting at a dinner attended by the President on Saturday night.
