Several players on LIV Golf have made initial attempts to explore a potential return to the PGA Tour, it has been reported. The future of the breakaway league, funded by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), has been uncertain for several weeks.
A report in the Wall Street Journal this week claimed that PIF will withdraw their funding from the league at the end of the current season. The update followed weeks of speculation surrounding LIV’s future, with several players leaving the PGA Tour and DP World Tour back in 2022 to join the breakaway league. As a result, several players’ futures are now in doubt, including the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Phil Mickelson, who all left the PGA Tour to join LIV.
A report in ESPN has now claimed that the agents of several unnamed players on LIV have approached the PGA Tour about the prospect of a return to the tour.
The PGA Tour have already given the opportunity to players on LIV to return to the Tour via the Returning Member Program earlier this year.
The program led to Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed deciding to return to the PGA Tour, albeit with sizable financial penalties.
Kopeka has returned to the PGA Tour, while Reed is serving a ban that will see him return to the Tour in August.
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil recently stated in a leaked email to staff that he expects the 2026 season to carry on “as planned”.
“I want to be crystal clear: Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle,” O’Neil stated. “While the media landscape is often filled with speculation, our reality is defined by the work we do on the grass.
“We are heading into the heart of our 2026 schedule with the full energy of an organisation that is bigger, louder, and more influential than ever before.
“The life of a startup movement is often defined by these moments of pressure. We signed up for this because we believe in disrupting the status quo.
“We have faced headwinds since the jump, and we’ve answered every time with resilience and grace. Now, we answer by doing what we do best: putting on the most compelling show in sports.”
