The popular chain operates more than 150 locations across the UK – and has become a ritual for countless people seeking their roast dinner fix.

But have you ever wondered what it’s like for staff working there while you’re tucking into your meal? The reality is, they’re probably not quite as keen on the experience as you may be.

We spoke with workers from the pub chain, who shared the benefits and drawbacks of being employed at the beloved roast restaurant. While some staff admitted they constantly smell of gravy, others praised the complimentary meals that help cure their hangovers.

1. Yes, we do get free food

Arguably the greatest advantage of the role – after all, who doesn’t love free food? Employees can pile their plates high with potatoes and all the trimmings without breaking the bank.

Many Toby Carvery locations provide staff with a 33% discount throughout all venues – though the workers we interviewed received plenty of complimentary food without spending anything.

This proves especially beneficial for those working a shift while hungover, as the food helps set them straight.

2. We say sorry hundreds of times per shift

Toby Carvery venues are famouly busy, and customers are absolutely everywhere – even more so on a Sunday. Weaving through the crowds while smiling and apologising has become quite the acquired skill.

Though staff are well aware it gets hectic, they’d genuinely appreciate it if you could make way for them when they’re collecting plates.

3. Refill your own drinks

On refillable drinks, the staff’s thoughts are clear: “If you have a bottomless drink and are able to refill it yourself, do so. And don’t get us started on customers who want a top up every five minutes.”

4. It’s all gravy

They say you shouldn’t bring work home with you, but there’s one reminder that’s hard to shake. On countless occasions, staff members have walked through their front door reeking of gravy. Delightful.

5. Our feet are gross

Dashing about all day in smart shoes leaves staff with hardened soles and horrible blisters that make many of them dread wearing sandals on holiday.
