Adidas are set to launch a commemorative Manchester United fourth kit, according to reports. In 2027, United will mark the 125th anniversary of the club adopting the red, white and black colours with which they are so closely associated.
The Reds traditionally operate with just three kits per season, a classic red home strip, an away kit and a third outfit in an alternative colour. However, this year Adidas are reportedly planning a ‘special’ fourth kit to honour United’s storied heritage. The design will pay tribute to the club’s transformation from Newton Heath to Manchester United in 1902, which saw the side switch from a green and gold jersey to the iconic colour scheme recognised by supporters and rivals alike to this day.

This is according to Footy Headlines, who claim there will be two distinct versions of the commemorative fourth kit. The first is understood to feature a ‘Man Utd Red’ base, expected to be paired with white shorts and black socks. A second version is believed to come in ‘Court Green’, serving as a nod to the club’s original identity.
It remains unclear whether the Newton Heath-inspired jersey will be worn by outfield players or serve as a goalkeeping strip. Neither commemorative kit is expected to go on sale until 2027, marking the 125th anniversary year.
It’s also believed the kit will likely feature in prospective Champions League fixtures or domestic cup competitions such as the FA Cup or the League Cup, provided United have not been eliminated from those by the time 2027 arrives.

Adidas have produced several one-off United kits and alternative strips, yet none have been utilised in competitive action. The brand has assembled Chinese New Year shirts and digital EA designs, but a fourth kit worn by the players has not been attempted before since their partnership commenced in 2015.
One of the nearest occasions the club came to this was in 2008, when United and Manchester City both donned retro-inspired strips in the Manchester Derby to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.
The 125th anniversary of the red, white and black adoption will undoubtedly fascinate supporters who spend money annually on the latest United kits. Given the importance of the year, it’s perhaps appropriate that Michael Carrick, a former United star, will be the one at the helm.
The ex-midfielder was handed a two-year deal at the conclusion of the Premier League campaign, following his success in steering the club to an emphatic third-placed finish. Next season, attention will shift to how Carrick can manage the Reds competing across four competitions, alongside his choices in his maiden transfer window as United boss.
