Fruit flies can become an absolute menace during the warmer months, making their elimination feel like a near-impossible challenge. Everywhere you turn, swarms appear, leaving you feeling thoroughly exasperated, and you have no clue why they’re there or where they’ve come from!

Yet Genevieve Levy has unveiled a brilliant technique that has attracted over a million views as she disclosed the secret to keeping her home free of these irritating pests, requiring nothing more than common household staples.

Genevieve, 33, discovered that fruit flies were perpetually present in her kitchen, notwithstanding regular cleaning and the absence of overripe fruit in her property, which typically draws these insects.

She acknowledged that “nothing is 100%” foolproof, though the approach she attempted “dramatically reduced” the quantity of flies visible throughout her home.

So, how can you eliminate these bothersome fruit flies permanently? Genevieve simply mixed four ingredients she has at home – including water.

The trick is remarkably straightforward, simply requiring you to combine washing-up liquid with sugar or honey in a bowl, incorporate some vinegar, then fill the mixture with water.

Genevieve subsequently covers the bowl with cling film, employing a knife to puncture holes sufficiently large for flies to enter the solution, while preventing their escape.

“And then literally just put it on the side where you normally get some [flies],” she explained.

She positioned hers beside some “concoctions”, seemingly fruit juices, on her kitchen worktop, claiming it captures virtually all the neighbouring fruit flies. Genevieve also advises pouring boiling water down the kitchen sink, as this is where they often hatch their eggs.

In the comments section, one viewer told her she was a “lifesaver,” because they’d been “struggling for days”.

They said: “I can’t use the sprays because I’m allergic to whatever’s in them, even after days of airing them out. I came home from the hospital after an emergency visit last week and must have left food in the bins, and they have been giving me hell since.”

A further viewer wrote: “This trick also works without kitchen film! The fairy liquid traps them basically, and they’re unable to fly away.

“Another hack if you have a fruit bowl and don’t want fruit flies in the summer, then put some corks under the fruit, they absorb any moisture and stop the flies,” said one viewer.

Someone else chimed in, saying they were going to “do this now”.
