Trump announces ‘ceasefire is over’ as he issues major update on Iran talks | World | News

Donald Trump claimed the ceasefire with Iran is over, while announcing the US has agreed to Iran’s alleged request to continue talks. It comes after the United States and Iran exchanged fresh military strikes two days ago, marking a sharp escalation in tensions.

The US carried out military strikes on Iranian islands, ports, and key infrastructure over two consecutive nights after alleging that Iran had attacked three vessels in the Strait, violating the conditions of an interim peace agreement. In response to the escalating situation, Qatari negotiators reportedly traveled to Iran in an urgent attempt to revive diplomatic talks and help ease tensions following two days of renewed military action in the region.

Donald Trump said the ceasefire between the US and Iran is “over” after renewed strikes overnight. The US President told reporters at the NATO summit: “I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum.”As far as I’m concerned, it’s over. It’s just a waste of time dealing with them, they’re liars.”He added that the negotiators from both sides “can talk” but are “wasting their time”.

The US President issued a statement on TruthSocial which stated: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue “talks.” We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The US military launched a series of what it described as “powerful” attacks on targets in southern Iran around on July 7, claiming the operation was in retaliation for an attack on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day.

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed a “crushing” retaliation and announced that it had struck 85 US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, while denouncing the American attacks as a violation of the ceasefire..

However, this is not the first time that the US President has spoken about the ceasefire. Recently, he spoke to the reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara, and said the ceasefire between the US and Iran is “over” after renewed strikes overnight.

He had said: “I don’t want to deal with them anymore, they’re scum. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over. It’s just a waste of time dealing with them, they’re liars.” He added that the negotiators from both sides “can talk” but are “wasting their time”.

Iran’s foreign ministry had strongly condemned the US strikes on the country, saying they leave parts of the two countries’ interim peace deal “ineffective”.

In a statement shared by Iranian state media, the ministry said the US military targeted “several monitoring and surveillance centres” along its southern coast.

The statement read: “These aggressive attacks are also a gross violation of Article 1 of the memorandum of understanding on the end of the war, which states the cessation of military operations.”
