Back in 1965, Michael Anderson directed the classic British spy thriller, Operation Crossbow. Starring Sophia Loren, George Peppard, Trevor Howard and John Mills, this World War 2 flick is based on a true story.
The real life operation saw British bombers targeting German manufacturing facilities for experimental rocket-bombs. The film alternates between Nazi Germany’s development of the V-1 flying bomb and V-2 rockets and British Intelligence’s attempts to thwart progress.
Although Loren has top billing, she only has a small role in the hotel sequence. Meanwhile, William Douglas-Home, the brother of Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home, wrote an early draft of the screenplay.
Operation Crossbow is on BBC Two at 12:20pm this Sunday afternoon.
