Popular UK retailer opens huge 29,000 sq ft mega-store today | UK | News

A popular UK retailer has opened a new mega-store today. Home Bargains welcomed its customers to the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead as it officially opened the new store. Shoppers were able to get their hands on new stock from 8:30am on Saturday, August 1, with discounts available through to 5:30pm.

Prior to the launch, Gateshead was home only to smaller Home Bargains stores on the high street. However, the new shop spans 29,000 square feet and is home to a GardenWorld and a cafe.

The beloved chain is known for offering customers a wide selection of cheap branded items, including homeware, toiletries, toys, and snacks.

When news of its opening was announced on social media, many welcomed the store to the town.

Mark Robertson said on Facebook: “I honestly thought that retail world would turn out to be a white elephant. But I now believe its another great asset to Gateshead.”

Charlotte Elder added: “Team Valley is getting a Home Bargains, our mooching has just levelled up!”

Janet Allan agreed: “Looking forward to it opening.”

The mega-store replaces an old Homebase, which collapsed into administration in November 2025, with locals happy to see the unit, which has sat empty since last year, put to good use. It’s been described as “another boost for local shopping”.

At the start of 2026, Home Bargains vowed to open 18 new UK stores and said there would be even more to come. It added that it hopes to expand its store network to between 800 and 1,000.
