Aldi has made a striking prediction about beer sales over the next two months as the start of the FIFA World Cup draws ever closer. The 37-day tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, officially kicks off on June 11, with hundreds of millions expected to tune in worldwide.
Households across Britain will be stocking up on snacks and drinks, or heading to pubs or fan zones to cheer on England as they seek to end 60 years of hurt and lift the trophy for the first time since 1966. Aldi anticipates a bumper period for beer sales and expects to sell a staggering 74 million cans across the tournament in the UK alone, between June 11 and July 19.
According to the German supermarket giant that’s more than 1,330 cans every single minute, or enough cans to line the length of 72,705 football pitches from end-to-end.
Aldi sells popular premium lagers from various producers alongside its own brand alternatives.
The retailer says it’s also predicting shoppers will buy over 14 million pizzas and more than nine million packs of crisps during the tournament, as football fans hunker down for weeks of elite football action.
England’s first match in Group L is against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17. Thomas Tuchel’s men will then take on Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27.
The final will take place on July 19 at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the US.
