Today marks the day that our seventh Prime Minister in 10 years takes office. Andy Burnham has quickly become the great chameleon of British politics. In his coronation address on Friday, Burnham looked down at his notes 266 times. The inability to give a speech anchored to his convictions doesn’t bode well for any political leader, but particularly not for one that is about to become Prime Minister without a shred of scrutiny.
By doing so, he told the country that he isn’t a man capable of delivering serious, radical change. He told us that he’s doing the job for the title, not out of the courage of his convictions.
After six U-turns alone during the Makerfield by-election and dodging any serious media examination since he first declared his plans, it’s hard for anyone to know what Burnham’s agenda for this country really is. But the only certainty is that this will be business as usual.
More taxes, more border chaos, more Europe, and an extra £10billion in foreign aid – all without any democratic mandate. That’s why, unlike the Tories who do not seem to take any interest in fighting elections these days, we are calling for an immediate general election.
Burnham must set out his stall, put it to the British people, and let us decide the future of our country.
