Argentina will be forced to change their kit in the wake of their controversial World Cup final defeat to Spain. Lionel Messi and Co were eventually beaten by Ferran Torres’s extra-time goal after their brutish and negative tactics fell short in New Jersey.
Argentina were looking to win the tournament for the fourth time in their history after Messi finally got his hands on the trophy in Qatar four years ago. Since becoming world champions, their kit had included a gold crest featuring an outline of the trophy and the words “FIFA World Champions 2022”. However, that proud addition to their legendary colour scheme will have to be removed, given they are no longer World Cup holders, with Spain to adopt the coveted gold badge for the next four years.
It also means they have to wait at least another four years before being able to add a fourth World Cup star to their shirt. Argentina can still bear a badge celebrating their Copa America triumph in 2024.
They will defend that trophy in 2028, two years before the next World Cup, which will be held predominantly in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Special single-match opening games will be held in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the World Cup.
Argentina didn’t relinquish the trophy or gold badge with grace. Following the final whistle, midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches at members of the Spain squad as they celebrated their victory on the pitch.
The South Americans were again criticised over their physical approach, as they were in their semi-final victory over England, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez sent off for two bookable offences.
A FIFA statement read: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA disciplinary code (FDC), the FIFA disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents. Further details will be communicated by the FIFA disciplinary committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”
It was thought Paredes had been sent off for his conduct at the end of the game but it was since emerged he was not shown a red card. Therefore, any suspension or sanction for him would arise from any retrospective probe that may be opened by the FIFA disciplinary committee.
