Authorities in Germany have issued a wanted notice for a suspect in the vehicle ramming near Berlin’s Pride festival.
Berlin police have named the suspect as Abdul B., a 21-year-old man with a “slim build” and black hair. He is wearing a black hoodie and white trousers, they say.
He is alleged to have injured several people in the Tiergarten area and is a fugitive, a statement reads.
“One or more people are believed to have subsequently fled the vehicle,” police continue.
“Furthermore, several people are reported to have been injured with stabbing weapons,” they add.
Berlin was plunged into chaos on Saturday evening after a vehicle drove into crowds attending the city’s annual Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations in Tiergarten Park.
Police confirmed one person died and at least 16 others were injured in the attack, with three victims left in a life-threatening condition.
Witnesses said a white minivan-style vehicle was travelling at speed before ploughing into pedestrians. The vehicle was left so badly damaged that police said it was difficult to identify its exact make and model.
A major manhunt is now under way after the driver fled the scene. More than 2,200 police officers have been deployed across Berlin as investigators continue their search.
Authorities have said the suspect is known to police and has links to the Islamist scene in Berlin.
nvestigators are continuing to establish a motive and have appealed for witnesses and anyone with footage of the attack to come forward.
The incident prompted organisers to cancel the remainder of Berlin Pride celebrations, with thousands of attendees evacuated from the area. Police have warned that the number of casualties could still rise as several of the injured remain in a critical condition.
