Chaos has erupted on Bournemouth beach after police officers were reportedly attacked in a mass brawl, with a helicopter searching for the culprits. Dozens of police officers and around 10 police vehicles were spotted in close proximity to Bournemouth Pier Approach from around 6pm on Tuesday (May 26).
Dorset Police confirmed they are “currently dealing with disorder involving a large number of people on Bournemouth beach in the area of Undercliff Drive”. Officers are at the scene making arrests, and are working to disperse those involved. The force added that it had been reported that officers had been “assaulted”, adding: “We would like to make it extremely clear this behaviour will not be tolerated.”
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan said: “I would like to thank the law-abiding members of the public for their support, but I am sending a clear message to those who are intent on causing harm or using violence to leave the vicinity.
“There will be a large police presence in the area while we seek to keep the public and our officers safe.
“We have commenced an investigation into the disorder and we will continue to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”
Dorset’s police and crime commissioner David Sidwick also said: “I have been in contact with senior officers regarding the disorder in Bournemouth this evening and I want to make clear that those involved in violence and criminality will be dealt with robustly.
“I will ensure our officers have the support and resources they need to respond effectively to this situation and keep the public safe.
“I would also like to thank all officers and emergency services personnel for their professionalism and dedication during this incident.”
The disorder on Bournmouth beach comes with UK temperatures soaring to above 30C once more today, with the Met Office declaring it the hottest May day on record.
Thousands of people have been flocking to the seaside town over the bank holiday weejend and during the school half term.
