Brits heading to Majorca next week are being warned to prepare for major traffic disruption as the island brings in widespread road restrictions for the total solar eclipse. Majorca is one of the best places in Europe to see the total solar eclipse on August 12 and as such, the Balearic Government has confirmed measures will come into force on Wednesday affecting cars, vans, motorcycles and mopeds as huge crowds are expected.
According to updated guidance published on August 4, the restrictions will generally be in place between 3pm and 9pm as part of the ECLIPBAL operation. However, authorities have warned road closures could begin earlier if traffic builds up, car parks become full or safety concerns arise. In Platja de Palma, controls will begin at 8am, while in Santa Ponça the operation will start 24 hours earlier on Tuesday, August 11. The Balearic Government confirmed the measures now apply to all motor vehicles, meaning there are “no general exemptions for motorcycles or mopeds.” It added: “The operation does not involve the general closure of Mallorca.”
Instead, traffic will be regulated on sensitive roads and access routes to prevent congestion and keep emergency routes clear.
The restrictions are designed to reduce gridlock, protect environmentally sensitive areas and ensure emergency services can respond quickly during the eclipse.
Some restrictions may remain in place after 9pm.
Authorities have also said goods suppliers will generally not be allowed to enter restricted areas while road closures are in force.
In Platja de Palma, maintenance, installation and delivery companies carrying out essential work must register as workers for the relevant establishment.
Officials are also advising visitors not to leave beaches, viewpoints or natural areas until the last minute, warning that heavy traffic, diversions and instructions from officers could delay journeys.
They have further urged people not to park on roadsides or emergency access routes, and to avoid lighting fires or barbecues because of the wildfire risk.
