Cheese lovers and daredevils are gathering to attend or witness the world-famous Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling event, which takes place every year on the last Bank Holiday Monday of May. The quirky event sees daring competitors from around the world trying to chase and grab a 7lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down one of the steepest hills in England – Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth.
During the centuries-old tradition, daredevils often fall as the wheel reaches impressive speeds. Ahead of today’s event, organisers issued a desperate plea to spectators and participants alike, urging them to use official parking zones, as local residents grow increasingly frustrated with gridlocked roads each year, as they are flooded with international visitors. In a plea posted on Facebook the day before the event, the official page for the Coopers Hill Cheese Roll, Brockworth, said: “We are literally begging you to park correctly and use one of the parking areas listed, as we get majorly moaned at about it! The whole area comes to a standstill massively so we need you to listen to us please.”
