Chelmsford evacuation LIVE: 100m cordon set up as items needing ‘specialist focus’ found | UK | News

Several properties have been evacuated in Chelmsford after police found a number of items “which require specialist focus”. Essex Police said in the early hours of Tuesday they had arrested two people as part of an ongoing investigation.

The statement read: “We executed a warrant at a property in Meadgate Avenue, Chelmsford, earlier this evening (Tuesday 9 June). Ahead of that warrant, a 34-year-old man, from Chelmsford, was arrested on suspicion of an offence under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883. A 33-year-old woman, from Ongar, was also arrested. Both remain in custody.

“As a result of searches at the Meadgate Avenue address, we have now identified items which require specialist focus and a number of properties in the area have been evacuated, with a 100-metre cordon put in place as a precaution. This is to ensure the safety of the community and to allow specialists the time and space to work.”
