Southern Co-op is giving thousands of customers who spend just £1 their shopping for free. The summer giveaway has been launched across 173 stores and will see 10,000 winners selected at random at checkout.
The “Pop in and win” promotion will end on Friday, August 21, with customers automatically entered for a chance to have their qualifying shop completely free. They don’t have to do anything and will be selected at random when paying at staffed or self-service checkouts at the supermarket. However, some products are not included in the promotion, such as alcohol, tobacco, fuel, lottery tickets and gift cards. The promotion is also excluded from Co-op franchised Welcome shops and home-delivery orders.
Meanwhile, the Co-op will also donate £1 to the Retail Trust for every shop awarded, which is set to equate to £10,000. The UK-based charity, which was established in 1832, supports the wellbeing, mental health, and financial aid of people working in the retail sector.
As well as the promotion, Co-op shoppers can also enter an online draw without making a purchase. The supermarket said 50 people will receive a £30 gift card to spend in their stores.
Anuj Christie, the Southern Co-op head of store operations, said the “Pop in and win” promotion is aimed at helping families during the summer months. He explained how it can be a difficult time for some people as they spend more time feeding and entertaining their children.
He also said the promotion was designed to create moments of “surprise and delight” for shoppers. It will also benefit retail workers through donations to the Retail Trust.
The Southern Co-op, which is part of the national Co-op group, runs 173 stores across southern England. The company is known for running promotions which benefit shoppers and local communities.
It previously ran a similar festive campaign where it paid for hundreds of customers’ Christmas shopping. It also gave £75,000 in grants to community organisations through its Winter Fund.
