Donald Trump has unveiled a brand-new golden statue in his image at Doral Miami ahead of the PGA Tour’s return to Blue Monster this week. The Tour is set to arrive on Thursday, April 30 for the Miami Championship.
And while there’s no guarantee that the President of the United States will be watching from the fringes of the greens and fairways, players and fans at the tournament will be greeted by a huge statue in his honour as they arrive. An image of the statue shared on social media shows Trump’s likeness raising his arm in the air in a gesture of triumph. It also stands on a stunning marble perch.
While some golf fans online were actually impressed by the figure, others took to social media to lambast the showing. One wrote: ” I love golf and watching the @PGATOUR but suddenly I have many other things to do this weekend,” while another added: “Something about idolatry…”
The statue is modelled on a pose Trump struck in the aftermath of a 2024 assasination attempt at an open-air campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. The artwork was also designed by Alan Cottrill and commissioned by cryptocurrency group, $PATRIOT.
A number of PGA Tour pros have also spoken about it, with Rickie Fowler saying: “It’s going to make me look smaller than I already am,” when asked if he will get a photograph next to it this week. Maverick McNealy also described it as “very tall and very gold.”
This week’s tournament marks the PGA Tour’s return to Doral for the first time in a decade. Originally designed by Dick Wilson in 1962 before its modernisation by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, the last PGA Tour event at the course was the 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship.
That was won by Adam Scott, who finished a stroke ahead of Bubba Watson at 12 under par. Trump bought the Doral Resort and Spa out of bankruptcy in 2012 for a reported price of £110million, before putting it through a £184m renovation the following year.
