Fifty-seven health conditions which could be recipients of the State Pension to an extra £114 have been listed by the Department for Work and Pensions. Updated guidance from the DWP details how pensioners with long-term health conditions or disabilities may be eligible for additional payments.
The extra money is to help older people cover the cost of personal care and daily living requirements via Attendance Allowance, a benefit that is usually not means-tested. You can get it if you have reached State Pension age and certain conditions apply.
These are: you have a physical or mental disability or a health condition; your disability or health condition is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself or someone to supervise you for yours or somebody else’s safety; you have needed that help for at least six months.
You also usually have to have been in the UK for at least two of the past three years when you claim, be resident in this country and are not subject to any immigration controls.
If you get the following benefits, you are not eligible: Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Adult Disability Payment, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance or Armed Forces Independence Payment.
Those who live in care homes with their care funded by a local council usually cannot get Attendance Allowance. If you pay for care home costs, then you can still claim.
The rates for Attendance Allowance increased by 3.8% in April, with payments divided into weekly rates based on the level of care needed.
A higher rate of £114.60 per week is intended for people who need help or supervision during both the day and night, or those nearing the end of their life. The lower rate is £76.70 per week.
