He made the revelation during an interview with Heart Radio from Cornwall last Friday. He told Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston: “I love that I’m the authority on scones.
“I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother. And she would definitely, she had the cream on first. Cream first, jam on top.”
On Saturday, Meghan Markle’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, shared a new clip on its Instagram page with a recipe for “warm scones” topped with their “Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey, and Flower Sprinkles”.
While the recipe did not feature any clotted cream, as it’s traditional with British scones, using “raw cream” instead, many fans noticed the coincidence and took to social media to criticise the duchess.
One user wrote on Reddit: “Oh for f***’s sake: just days after Prince William says how the late Queen put clotted cream on her scones before jam, As ever does THIS.”
A second one commented: “At this point, if William says the Queen preferred Evian, she’ll bathe in it by Thursday.”
A third one said: “That is beyond cosplay. We all heard Prince William say his grandmother put the cream first. Who does she think she’s fooling?”
Meanwhile, another one shared on X: “Meghan Markle is As ever copy the Royals, she isn’t Royal.”
A fifth one added: “This is now getting very strange.”
It comes as the Duchess teased the brand’s next big launch, with fans predicting it will be a new box of matches.
In a picture shared on the brand’s page, an As Ever candle can be seen resting on what appears to be a mantelpiece, alongside a vase filled with flowers and a teapot. But the candle is not the only As Ever product in the picture; a brand-new matchbox is laid right beside it.
The matchbox bears the As Ever logo and is thought to be the next product released on the website, with the message accompanying the picture reading: “A small spark, arriving tomorrow [candle emoji].”
As Ever’s matches will be available to purchase sometime today.
