A young girl has died after allegedly falling from her wheelchair during a primary school sports day in Scotland. The heartbreaking incident occurred at Greenburn School in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, on May 15.
It’s understood that the eight-year-old girl passed away after falling from her wheelchair during a race. She was rushed to hospital and subsequently discharged, but then readmitted after falling ill, where she sadly died.
Police Scotland said they are treating the pupil’s death as unexplained, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
South Lanarkshire Council confirmed the girl’s classmates are receiving support.
A spokesman said: “We are aware of the tragic passing of one of our pupils. We will be offering support to their classmates and staff as they deal with the tragedy.”
A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: “Around 11.45am on Saturday, 16 May, 2026, we received a report an eight-year-old girl had taken unwell at a property in East Kilbride.
“Emergency services attended and the child was taken to hospital where she died. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. “
