A newly-elected Green Party councillor has posted videos of himself driving gas-guzzling supercars on social media. Mohammad Baghdadi Khan won Bolton’s Halliwell ward for the Greens at the local elections last week.
Despite the Greens’ push against car use, Mr Khan appears in videos posted from accounts on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook behind the wheel of a number of high-end vehicles. One clip features a Lamborghini Huracán Spyder, which can cost up to £270,000.
One of the videos appears to have been shot during a wedding in 2023, with a convoy of supercars ferrying guests to a venue.
In another, Mr Khan appears behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz en route to a boxing event.
Green Party local election campaign literature featuring Mr Khan includes pledges for “better roads and bin collections” and to “tax billionaires, not workers”.
But his apparent fondness for supercars has led to accusations of hypocrisy. One TikTok user commented: “Absolute joke a local councillor driving a car like that.”
Mr Khan is reported by the Daily Mail to have replied: “Who said councillors can’t drive cars like this?”
The Greens’ own policy notes that transport choices account for a about a quarter of planet-warming carbon emissions.
Greener travel choices are described as “vital” by the party, which pledges to champion “better, cheaper” public transport.
In April, the party stated its wish to see the speed limit cut to 55mph on major roads outside built up areas in a bid to increase fuel efficiency.
The Greens saw 13% of their candidates win a seat at this year’s local elections (587 out of 4,478). This is almost double the rate in 2025, when they won 7%.
Green candidates also won mayoral contests in Hackney and Lewisham, unseating the now previous Labour mayors.
The Green Party and Mr Khan have been approached for comment.
