A baby has died in hospital, with two people now arrested after police rushed to a house in Gateshead. Police was called to a property in Deckham on Thursday after the ambulance service raised a report of concern for the welfare of the infant.
The baby was reportedly rushed to hospital, however, died a short time later. Two people have been arrested and released on bail.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 1.45pm yesterday (Thursday), we received a report via the ambulance service of concern for the welfare of a baby in the Gateshead area. The baby was taken to hospital but tragically died a short time later.
“Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this time. We immediately launched an investigation, and two people have been arrested in connection with the report.
“A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect. Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
“The investigation is very much at an early stage, and we would ask people to avoid speculation as officers take the necessary time to establish the circumstances.”
