Two marathon runners sacrificed personal bests to rescue a stricken competitor in a heartwarming act of sportsmanship. Ajay Haridasse was nearing the end of the Boston Marathon when exhaustion took its toll, causing him to fall with the finish line in sight. He tried to get back up but couldn’t muster the strength to pull himself to his feet.
Luckily for him, two rival runners were prepared to abandon their own races to help him finish. Aaron Beggs was first to stop and pull Haridasse off the ground, but even with the support of another person, he struggled to stay upright. Another runner, Robson De Oliveira, quickly stepped in and the pair worked together, collectively hauling Haridasse over the line.
The incident was caught on camera by several spectators waiting to greet friends and loved ones at the end of the race. Footage showed Haridasse making several desperate attempts to get back on his feet while onlookers shouted encouragement.
Dozens of runners passed the struggling athlete without a second thought before Beggs stepped in to provide a helping hand.
De Oliveira, who was on track to run his fastest marathon, also sacrificed his own time to bring Haridasse to his feet and guide him over the finish line.
The selflessness of both runners prompted huge cheers from the crowd and the footage has already been viewed millions of times on social media.
Speaking afterwards, Haridasse told the Boston Herald that he tracked down his two helpers on Instagram and thanked them for their actions.
“After falling down the fourth time, I was getting ready to crawl,” he said. “If he [De Oliveira] didn’t help me, that would have been his fastest race ever.”
De Oliveira later posted about the incident on social media, writing: “It was a split-second decision. When I entered the final stretch of the marathon, I was just a few metres away from achieving my personal best.
“In the distance, I saw [Haridasse] collapsing. I knew I wouldn’t have the strength to help him on my own. In that moment, I thought: ‘God, if someone stops, I’ll stop too and help him’.
“And God was so generous to us that [Beggs] stopped, and I knew I could help, because two are stronger than one. I’m grateful to God for the strength He gave us in that moment, and that [Haridasse] didn’t give up.
“My friend, you were incredibly strong! Congratulations on the race. This is the spirit of Boston! Thank you for giving me this experience! I’ll be back here in 2027, God willing. I won’t give up on breaking the 2:40 barrier in this distance.”
