Klopp pleads for Red Bull to lift block as Germany job talks confirmed | Football | Sport

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has entered into talks over taking charge of the Germany national team. Germany are searching for a new boss following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure, which was confirmed after the nation’s elimination from the World Cup.

Nagelsmann had steered Germany to the round of 32 at the World Cup, before suffering a defeat to Paraguay in a penalty shootout and missing out on a potential last-16 clash with France.

Klopp has been linked with a return to the dugout ever since leaving Liverpool in 2024, during which time he has taken up the role of head of global football at Red Bull.

The 59-year-old has now revealed that the German Football Association (DFB) have already approached him regarding the vacancy, though explained that he would want to leave Red Bull on the best of terms.

“Yes, I can confirm the talks,” Klopp said on Magenta TV, where he is currently working as a pundit for the 2026 World Cup.

“Things moved along quite quickly. Julian [Nagelsmann] has resigned and the DFB is working on a successor. And in the course of these considerations, they approached me.

Klopp added: “I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I’ve said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I’ve also made it clear that I’m interested in talks with the DFB.

“I need to talk to Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already discussed things. I assume he won’t stand in my way. I was there for 19 months. It was an intense time. Ideally, everyone wins in the end. Red Bull needs to come out of this clean.”

Klopp has also stated that he is “ready” to return to football management following a two-year break from the touchline.

“I’m more than ready now, so I’m prepared,” Klopp said.

The DFB had previously announced earlier in the week that they had expressed an interest in appointing Klopp as Germany’s new manager.

“Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp,” part of a statement read, which also confirmed Nagelsmann’s departure. “He [Klopp] has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.”
