A new Lidl store opening has been confirmed for a UK town. It comes as the German supermarket giant submitted planning applications for the site in Didcot in 2025. The development submitted by Martin’s Development A1 Limited will see the new supermarket located on Abingdon Road, marking its ninth store in Oxfordshire.
The opening will also create around 40 new jobs, according to the budget supermarket. Lidl GB told the Express: “We’ve seen demand for our affordable, high-quality products continue to rise in Oxfordshire, and we are committed to serving more communities in the area. Our new store will create around 40 new jobs and build on our continued growth. We’re excited to be a step closer to opening this store and thank everyone who has supported us on our journey so far.”
According to the development’s planning statement, the site will be completely transformed to a large supermarket with multiple parking spaces for cars and bikes, and electric vehicle charging points.
It added: “The site peripherals have enhanced landscaping as well as retaining key areas of existing landscaping – particularly the tree lines to the north and east boundaries.
“To the rear of the site is the new self-storage development. This has a main building immediately behind the food store and a series of smaller garage-type units in the remaining area of the site.
“The layout is planned as a one-way system, generally with a two-way system at the main entrance and exit road.”
The new store is part of the supermarket’s commitment to investing over £600 million to strengthen its store network and unlock regional growth across the nation.
Ryan McDonnell, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth.
“Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future. Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.”
