Fans of period dramas must not miss this compelling film that delves into the destructive nature of love, now available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Psychological thriller Phantom Thread was released in 2017 and is set in 1950s London, following a dressmaker and his complex relationship with a young waitress, who becomes his muse.
Phantom Thread starred Daniel Day-Lewis as highly respected fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock, whose creations are worn by royalty and women from the upper echelons of society. Meanwhile, The Crown’s Lesley Manville portrayed his sister Cyril Woodcock, who manages his fashion house. Luxembourgish and German actress Vicky Krieps plays Reynolds’ muse and waitress Alma Elson, reports Gloucestershire Live.

Phantom Thread was written and directed by American filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, marking his first movie shot outside of the USA and also his second collaboration with Day-Lewis after 2007’s There Will Be Blood.
The film was shot across numerous locations throughout the UK, amongst them Owlpen Manor, nestled near Uley and Dursley in Gloucestershire. The stunning Tudor estate served as a principal setting for Phantom Thread, portraying Reynolds’ rural hideaway.
This is not the first occasion Owlpen Manor has featured on screen, having previously appeared in Tess of the D’Urbervilles (2008), The Other Boleyn Girl (2007) and even an episode of Escape to the Country. Alongside the manor house, production also occurred throughout North Yorkshire, with sequences captured in Lythe, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay near Whitby.
Phantom Thread saw further production undertaken at Grosmont Station along the North York Moors Railway and the North York Moors National Park’s coastal clifftops by Ravenscar.
The film maintains a 91 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, garnered numerous award nominations, including several Oscar nods, and many viewers have lauded Phantom Thread on IMDb.
