A popular UK seaside town has been given a huge boost ahead of the summer. A new safety scheme has been confirmed which is set to benefit businesses across the town.
Morecambe BID has secured funding to upgrade its MoreNet community radio network. The radio coverage enables better communication, information sharing and rapid incident response among businesses and Pubwatch members. Its expansion has been backed by Morecambe and Lunsedale MP Lizzi Collinge (Labour) as well as Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw.
As reported by the Lancashire Telegraph, the network will be improved and additional radios will be rolled out to businesses in Morecambe. According to Tim Barbary, who leads the Safe Morecambe initiative, communication is vital to keep the town safe during the busy summer months.
He said: “Expanding the MoreNet network means businesses, Pubwatch, and the police can share information quickly and effectively, helping us prevent issues and respond as a joined-up community. This is about creating a safer, more confident environment for businesses, residents, and visitors alike.”
David Waddington, chair of Morecambe BID, added: “This is exactly the kind of practical investment that makes a real difference to businesses on the ground. Expanding the MoreNet radio network strengthens communication, supports partnership working, and gives businesses greater confidence that they are connected and supported.”
The improved radio coverage is expected to benefit pubs, bars and clubs across Morecambe this summer. Security will be able to remain in regular contact to negate any issues.
As well as expanding the radio scheme, the Safe Morecambe initiative will also see improved CCTV and upgraded lighting across the town. The BID are working closely to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.
Ms Collinge said the initiatives make “day-to-day difference” in the town. The radio system will help keep businesses connected and make a “safer town centre for everyone”.
