But while more reinforcements are expected, they may not be in the shape of a third midfielder, as had been expected previously. Instead, the Old Trafford decision-makers are looking to push their funds to improve another area of the squad. Here, Express Sport takes a look at the latest United transfer news…
United have registered an interest in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, according to The Telegraph. The 22-year-old has already accumulated 137 appearances for the Serie A outfit and would offer much-needed reinforcement to Carrick’s defensive line, particularly given the injury troubles of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt last campaign.
The £32million-rated Italy international is well known to those at the top of United’s hierarchy, having previously been watched by the Red Devils. The centre-back is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder on occasion also.
Carrick has reportedly abandoned plans to recruit a third midfielder, with the remaining transfer budget potentially being allocated towards securing a defender.
That would scupper any renewed interest in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who was also the subject of a £64m bid from Chelsea earlier in the window.
United have yet to strengthen their forward line this summer, beyond the return of Marcus Rashford, but that hasn’t prevented Carrick from considering allowing Joshua Zirkzee to depart the club.
According to Sky Sport Italy, Juventus are keen on securing the Dutch forward on a season-long loan. The 25-year-old has struggled to cement his place at the club following his £36.5million arrival in 2024, netting just nine goals in 75 outings across all competitions.
The report suggests that Zirkzee has already provided his consent to the Serie A heavyweights, with chances at United becoming limited last year due to the presence of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
