The upcoming summer transfer window is a crucial one for Manchester United. Barring a late slump, the Red Devils will return to the Champions League next season and will need to bolster their squad for the expanded fixture list. Just one victory from the final four matches of the campaign would be sufficient to secure a top-five finish for Michael Carrick’s side.

Even that might not be required, with sixth-placed Brighton 11 points adrift and Bournemouth a point further behind in seventh. United’s hierarchy are understood to be eager to conclude business as swiftly and seamlessly as possible. They are determined to avoid a repeat of the summer of 2022, when they invested considerable time chasing Frenkie de Jong only to find themselves forced to pursue alternative targets in August.

This is made more complex by the World Cup, which could affect the pace at which United can finalise deals in both directions. There is still much they can complete at an early stage, though, and we have examined what an ideal start to the window might look like.

Rashford resolution reached

Marcus Rashford has spent the 2025/26 on loan at Barcelona, who have an option to make the transfer permanent. However, recent reports suggest the Catalan club would favour a second loan over activating their £26million option.

Rashford has contributed 13 goals and 13 assists for Barca, recording a goal involvement every 90 minutes on the pitch. His impressive displays have also earned him a recall to the England national side.

United may opt to hand another opportunity to a player who remains contracted until 2028, or they could conclude that a permanent split serves them better. Whatever they decide, this is one transfer they’ll feel confident they can resolve sooner rather than later.

£40m deal rubber-stamped

While uncertainty continues to surround Rashford’s future, the situation appears far more straightforward regarding another player United dispatched on loan this season. Rasmus Hojlund has spent the campaign in Italy with Napoli, who will make the move permanent for just under £40m provided they secure Champions League qualification.

Unlike the Rashford situation, this is an obligation rather than an option. It hinges on Napoli finishing in the top four in Serie A, which appears increasingly likely, with Antonio Conte’s side sitting second with four games remaining, eight points ahead of fifth-placed Como.

Hojlund has netted 10 goals in Serie A this term and 14 across all competitions, with Napoli chief Giovanni Manna indicating around the turn of the year that a permanent transfer was virtually a foregone conclusion. “The player considers himself a Napoli player, and the same goes for us. This is extremely important,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

While the World Cup could make negotiations more challenging over certain potential targets, numerous high-profile names won’t be heading to North America. These include United-linked midfielder Sandro Tonali, who featured in the Italy squad defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in their play-off.

With Casemiro set to depart United when his contract runs out at the end of June, at least one new central midfielder is essential. Tonali would bring considerable Premier League experience, having scarcely missed a match for Newcastle throughout the past two campaigns.

Another World Cup absentee whom United could target early on is Carlos Baleba. The Brighton midfielder, 22, watched his Cameroon team miss out after finishing runners-up in their qualifying group and losing a play-off semi-final against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There will be numerous United supporters who believe Michael Carrick has accomplished more than enough during his interim period in charge to warrant being handed the managerial position permanently. He assumed control in January with the club positioned in seventh, but a sequence of just two defeats in 13 matches has lifted them into the top three.

Carrick isn’t the sole contender. Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has been mentioned as a possibility, with the Spaniard able to offer a different calibre of experience at the elite level.
