Man Utd ‘make Michael Carrick U-turn’ with decision on next manager | Football | Sport

Manchester United are reportedly having second thoughts about appointing Michael Carrick as permanent head coach beyond this season. The Red Devils appointed Carrick as their interim boss until the summer, back in January, following the exit of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick has since steered United to third place in the Premier League table, placing the club in a strong position to secure Champions League football with six matches still to play. The past couple of months have been rife with speculation over whether Carrick could be handed the United job on a full-time basis this summer, and a fresh development has now emerged regarding the Old Trafford hierarchy’s thinking.

According to the i Paper, United were on the verge of offering Carrick the job on a permanent basis.

Iraola has been linked with the United hotseat for several months, and the 43-year-old is set to vacate his post at the Vitality Stadium when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.

It remains to be seen which direction United will ultimately take come the summer, with the outcome of the current season likely to prove pivotal in those deliberations.

Liverpool trail by a further three points in fifth, while Chelsea are seven behind United in sixth, which currently falls outside the Champions League qualification places.

Iraola is not the only Premier League manager poised to depart their existing role amid speculation with the United vacancy.

Oliver Glasner is rumoured to be a contender and has already announced that he will leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires this summer.
