Man Utd require permission for £35m transfer after last-minute intervention | Football | Sport

Manchester United are revising their schedule to finalise a £35million deal for Ederson after the midfielder received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. United have agreed terms with Atalanta to bring in the 26-year-old, which will also include up to £3.8million in performance-related bonuses, while a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months has been settled with the player.

However, Ederson is yet to complete a medical and put pen to paper on his switch to Old Trafford, with that process originally scheduled for early July. That timeline may now require adjustment following his selection by Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday as cover for the injured full-back Wesley in Brazil’s 26-man squad.

Ederson linked up with his international team-mates at their Columbia Park training base in New Jersey on Monday, with the Selecao beginning their campaign against Morocco on Saturday.

While not entirely out of the question, completing Ederson’s transfer to United during the World Cup would require co-operation from both the player and the Brazilian football federation (CBF). United will need permission from the CBF.

The more probable scenario is that Ederson will undergo his medical and finalise the documentation for his Old Trafford move once Brazil’s World Cup campaign concludes, before the midfielder is granted his summer holiday.

Ederson’s promotion to Brazil’s squad, having not earned a cap since March 2025, means his arrival for pre-season training at Carrington will be pushed back.

He had previously been anticipated to remain with United throughout the summer and feature in their pre-season opener against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.

That fixture falls the day before the World Cup final and, in line with the rest of United’s players involved in North America, Ederson will be granted a period of rest between the conclusion of his tournament and his return to pre-season training.
