Man Utd set to announce first summer transfer as contract discussions break down | Football | Sport

Manchester United are reportedly edging closer to securing a transfer for Swansea City goalkeeper Kit Margetson, which would represent their first signing of the summer window. The teenage stopper is set to become a free agent upon the expiry of his contract with the Welsh club, having been on their books since under-15 level.

Swansea confirmed in May that contract extension talks were underway, but it appears those negotiations have since collapsed. The young goalkeeper failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Championship side throughout his time at the club, though he did gain valuable senior experience during a loan stint with Connah’s Quay Nomads last season.

United are now poised to complete the signing of the goalkeeper, with the youngster likely to slot into the club’s under-21 squad, according to BBC Sport.

The Red Devils are expected to make several changes within their goalkeeping ranks this summer.

Andre Onana is set to head to Trabzonspor on loan for a second successive season, having spent the previous campaign with the Turkish club.

Second-choice keeper Altay Bayindir is also widely expected to leave in search of more regular first-team football. He found himself behind Senne Lammens in the pecking order throughout last season.

United have been linked with a move for Leeds United stopper Karl Darlow this summer as they hunt for a deputy to Lammens.

The Welshman is out of contract at Elland Road, making him available on a free transfer, although several other clubs, including Everton, are also reportedly keen.

Third-choice keeper Tom Heaton, meanwhile, has penned a new deal at Old Trafford. The veteran stopper has made just three first-team appearances for United since arriving on a free transfer in 2020.

Upon signing the new contract, the former England international said: “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United. You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success.

“I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

Should a deal be finalised, Margetson would become the first new arrival under Michael Carrick, with United also reportedly closing in on a £35million swoop for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
