Mason Greenwood decides on next club as Man Utd set to receive millions | Football | Sport

Manchester United stand to profit as Mason Greenwood sets his sights on his next club in an impending departure from Marseille this summer. The striker is ready to leave France for Roma after the club fell short of securing Champions League qualification.

Greenwood has had an outstanding campaign, registering 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions in 2025/26, attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. However, Roma appear to be leading the race, having made contact with the player’s father, with Greenwood reportedly keen on the project.

That’s according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim that the prolific forward will bring his spell in France to a close after Les Phoceens missed out on qualification for Europe’s premier club competition. Greenwood originally completed a £26.6million switch from Old Trafford in 2024 after United decided he could no longer remain at the club.

The academy graduate was suspended by United when he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour in 2022. The 24-year-old denied the charges, which were subsequently dropped, but went on to join Marseille following a season on loan at Getafe.

United are understood to have inserted a sell-on clause in the original agreement, entitling them to up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee for Greenwood. Marseille are reportedly seeking £43m for the striker, who remains under contract until 2029.

Marseille find themselves under pressure to offload players after missing out on Champions League qualification. The French club are said to be in a ‘precarious financial situation’ and need to complete multiple sales before June 30 to satisfy France’s financial regulator.

Reports emerging from Turkey suggest that Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi wants to unveil the capture of Greenwood as part of his plans to revitalise the club’s prospects. Roma will hope their existing ties with Marseille give them an edge.

Greenwood has previously made clear his wish to stay at the Stade Velodrome, although Marseille’s financial predicament may render that problematic. Speaking after earning selection in Ligue 1’s team of the season, the forward acknowledged it had been a challenging period for the club.

“This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months,” he said. “But individually I think I’ve had a good season.

“There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it’s nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league.

“We play incredible matches and, for me, it’s one of the best leagues I’ve played in. I hope I can stay.”
