Max Verstappen approves McLaren move as Red Bull driver reveals private talks | F1 | Sport

Red Bull confirmed Lambiase would continue in his dual role of race engineer, as well as the team’s head of racing, until his planned departure. There has been speculation surrounding what it could mean for Verstappen’s future, but the Dutchman has given his seal of approval to the move.

Speaking about the engineer’s exit, Verstappen said: “Of course, I have a very good relationship with GP. He also told me what the offer from McLaren was. I said to him: ‘You would be stupid not to do that.’

“We have already achieved everything, won the world title multiple times. And who knows, maybe in the future we will work together again outside of Formula. We are friends for life. We are still young. It was an incredible offer, and it provides security for his family. You have to take that into account too.”

Verstappen has endured a dismal start to the Formula One season, finishing just two of the three races so far. He’s been an outspoken critic of the new engine regulations and has even threatened to quit the sport if there aren’t significant changes.

Commenting on the threats, the reigning champion Lando Norris said: “Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants. He’s won four world championships.

“And he’s always been that guy, it’s not just now. He’s always been very open to say what he thinks, whether you agree or not or whether you should say it or shouldn’t. He’s himself and I think that’s a very good way to live your life.

“It would be a shame for the sport, it will be a miss for the sport, if that does happen because he probably is one of the best drivers you’ll see in Formula 1 ever.”

After an enforced spring break because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, racing will finally resume for the first time in over a month next weekend with the Miami Grand Prix. Mercedes duo Kimi Antonelli and George Russell lead the way after a blistering start to proceedings.
