Met Office urges UK households to fully charge mobile phones on Wednesday | UK | News

A yellow alert for thunderstorms is in place between 10pm on Tuesday (May 26) and 2am on Wednesday (May 27) in seven areas.

The Met Office said: “An area of thunderstorms is moving eastwards and will clear later this evening or during the early hours of Wednesday. “Where storms occur, heavy rain and frequent lightning is expected and 20 to 30 mm of rain may fall in 30 to 60 minutes in some places.

“Storms may also be accompanied by hail and gusty winds in a few spots.”

The stormy conditions follow record temperatures for May across the UK.

Households have been warned to make sure that phones are fully charged on Wednesday, as the chance of power cuts is higher due to the storms.

The Met Office urges UK residents to be prepared ahead of a power cut with some simple precautions.

This includes ensuring all mobile devices are charged in case of an emergency.

The forecaster also encourage anyone who doesn’t have a mobile device or lives in an area with poor/no mobile signal to speak to your communications provider about additional support they can offer you in advance.

Other ways to prepare include making sure you have multiple torches along with extra batteries and keeping important documents safe and handy.

If your power goes off unexpectedly, check to see if your neighbours still have electricity.

The Met Office also warn people who rely on power for healthcare to have a plan.

The weather channel say as well as power cuts, there may be impact to travel with some communities.

The Met Office added:”Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.”
