Morrisons store with Post Office to shut in UK town on August 8 | UK | News

A Morrisons store with a Post Office in a UK town has confirmed its closure. It will close for good on Saturday, August 8, following a wider review from the supermarket chain.

The Morrisons Daily on Phelps Parade in Calne, Wiltshire, was among the stores earmarked for closure this year. It has now been confirmed that it will shut for good in August, including the closure of the Post Office branch inside the supermarket. A spokesperson for Morrisons previously said the closure comes after a review identified stores “whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss making.” They added that staff affected by the closures “will not be at risk of redundancy and a consultation will commence shortly”.

As reported by the Wiltshire Times, the Morrisons Daily store opened in February, 2024 following refurbishment work at the unit. The Post Office is now advertising the vacancy and is welcoming interest from retailers.

The closure of the Post Office means that Calne residents are being directed to the James Avenue Post Office at Spar, located around a mile away. There is also the Quemerford Post Office situated around 1.2 miles from the Morrisons branch.

The Post Office has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the closure. They will provide another update once there is more information about future plans for a branch in Calne.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Post Office said: “Our retail partner has reviewed their Morrisons Daily store operations and has decided to close their store at Calne. Consequently, the Post Office branch at this location will close on 8 August.

“We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers and small businesses who rely on our banking and parcel services in particular.

“We have now advertised the vacancy for the branch on our runapostoffice.co.uk website. We welcome applications from nearby retailers looking to host a Post Office inside their store.”
